WASHINGTON D.C., SEPTEMBER 08, 2026 – The Canadian American Business Council (CABC) is deeply concerned by the continued escalation of tariffs between Canada and the United States, including Canada’s counter-tariffs on U.S. goods that took effect today.
The United States and Canada share the world’s most integrated economic relationship. Every day, businesses, workers, and consumers on both sides of the border rely on highly integrated supply chains and the predictable movement of goods and services. Tariffs disrupt these relationships, increase costs, and create uncertainty for businesses making decisions about investment, production, and jobs.
Tariffs are not a sustainable solution to the underlying challenges in the bilateral relationship. They risk creating a cycle of escalating costs that ultimately affects businesses and consumers in both countries.
The CABC strongly encourages both governments to use every available channel to return to constructive negotiations and pursue a durable, mutually beneficial trade arrangement. We emphasize the importance of continued engagement and a willingness to find common ground.
The bilateral economic relationship is too important to be defined by tariffs and a breakdown of trust. Our shared prosperity and security depend on keeping our integrated economies competitive and underpinned by a framework of free and fair trade. The CABC will continue working with policymakers and business leaders on both sides of the border to advance practical solutions that strengthen the North American economy.
We urge both countries to seize every opportunity to reduce tariffs, restore predictability, and reinforce the economic partnership that has benefited both countries for generations.
