WASHINGTON, DC, AUGUST 22, 2024 – The Canadian American Business Council recognizes the critical role that our integrated rail network plays in supporting our supply chain and interconnectivity on both sides of the border. Rail is essential for the seamless movement of goods between our two countries. This stoppage will impact consumers and workers across multiple industries and sectors in Canada and the United States.

From petroleum to agriculture to mineral supply chains, these shutdowns impact more than one sector. CN transports more than C$250 billion annually, with 25 percent of its operations travelling cross border between Canada and the United States. The impact of a prolonged shutdown thus extends far beyond Canada’s borders but will have adverse impacts for the North American economy at large.

We encourage all parties to come back to the table and work expeditiously to secure agreements to restore the utilization of this vital infrastructure. Our interconnected supply chains are critical to our shared prosperity.
